Blacksmith Fork River, located southeast of Hyrum, is a scenic small stream offering quality trout fishing. Stocked rainbows and wild brown trout are the main attractions, with fish averaging 10–14 inches, the most commonly caught fish being brown trout.

Highway 101 provides easy access along most of the river’s course through Blacksmith Fork Canyon. Popular spots include the Left Hand Fork and near Hardware Ranch. The stream is ideal for fly fishing, with dry flies like caddis and mayflies producing during hatches. Nymphs and small streamers are effective in deeper water or cooler weather.

Target Species: Brown and rainbow trout, mountain whitefish.

Drive time: 1.75 hrs., 100 miles.

Level of fishing difficulty: Moderately easy. 4 wt. rod with floating line works well.  Shorter rods in the 8-8.5' length may help avoid some of the brush.

Access: Paved, two-wheel drive is sufficient.  Highway 101 provides easy access along most of the river’s course through Blacksmith Fork Canyon.

Weather: Up to 5200' and beyond.  River is in a canyon that can be shades, so expect cooler temperatures than in SLC valley.

Terrian: Normal public access with little hiking.  Brushy banks and submerged deadwood not uncommon.

Wading difficulty: Moderate with silty bottom somewhat common.  Readily accessible from the road with easy stream bank walking.  Can be crossed in some locations but may deep troughs can make crossing difficult in areas.

License:  Utah fishing license required.
